If I wanted to become a professional I would first talk to other professionals because that kind of education is very expensive. I learned XHTML and CSS on my own through library books and the Internet but use mostly free applications such as The Gimp and Html-Kit. Professionals probably use Adobe products such as Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and Flash.

There seems to be a division between web site design and web site development. Development involves scripting languages such as ASP.net and PHP. I use PHP, and MySQL for personal use. It took me a lot longer to learn scripting and SQL than it did to learn HTML and CSS.

If you go into development I would suggest making sure that you will be taught enough security to actually get web sites onto the Internet so that they are secure.

Design and development are challenging and fun and I am aware that people who really know their stuff make a lot of money in this field.

Photoshop is a very small part of graphic design. I find it very funny (and also irritating) when someone thinks they can be a graphic designer simply because they think they are "very good with photoshop", which seems to be quite often.

Although i doubt you'd get any graphic work with Photoshop alone, I suggest you set up a free blog or website to show off your skills. Try Blogger, WordPress, or google free web hosting.

No one is going to recommend you, or give money to a 17 year old (or any one of any age for that matter) with no design experience, formal training, nor a portfolio.

I know that sounds harsh, but it is the truth.

I suggest you keep looking for other work until you can afford to study graphic design. Just keep hounding places every week for work – eventually, someone will hire you. If you are really desperate for work, you will work anywhere – fast food, department stores, grocery stores etc.
